Single Start Worm

Single start worms are a specialized type of transmission worm shaft with the start number fixed at one. The single-start design provides a small lead angle with self-locking capability. This means the worm can drive the worm wheel, but the worm wheel cannot back-drive the worm. This characteristic proves highly valuable in lifting equipment, conveying machinery, and applications requiring reverse motion prevention. Modules range from 2 to 8 with lead angles from 3° to 7°, generally controlled within 6° to ensure reliable self-locking performance.

Thread face widths range from 35 to 180 millimeters with tip diameters from Φ28 to Φ140 millimeters, accuracy Grade 7-9. Overall shaft length spans 150 to 700 millimeters with shaft diameters from Φ22 to Φ85 millimeters. Keyway widths range from 5 to 20 millimeters for motor or pulley connections. Single start worms have small lead angles, and the thread helix angles are also small during machining, requiring different tool and setup approaches than multi-start worms. Our setup technicians adjust machining parameters based on lead angle to ensure accurate thread profiles.

Material uses 40Cr steel with quenching and tempering to HB 230-270. Tooth surface hardening achieves HRC 48-56. Single start worms experience relatively low sliding speeds under self-locking conditions, but unit area pressure remains high, increasing galling failure risk. Case depth must reach at least 1.0 millimeter, representing our strictly controlled minimum. If case depth is too shallow, tooth surfaces rapidly wear during extended heavy-load operation, causing loss of self-locking capability. Our quality control team inspects case depth and tooth surface hardness on every product.
